TWILIGHT CIRCUS
DUB SOUND SYSTEM
Dub Plates Volume Two (M)
Since that night in 1967 when selector Ruddy Redwood spun a vocal-less acetate
in a Kingston dance hall and the midnight ravers demanded "Rewind!" dub ciontists have
been perfecting the art of 12st-century soul nonic;) But while King Tubby's progeny -
from hip-hop to house, dance hall to drum'n'bass - have gone forth to mutate pop's
subconscious, mother
If only innovators like Wimbish could shake the cultural prejudice that insists.
Tubby, Perry and Hudson must tower over '90s sound-boys. Enter Ryan Moore, the
Legendary Pink Doys escapee behind Twilight Circus, who wrestles with history's titans
and leaves the ring commanding 'nuff respect. In his kaleiscope world a feather weighs a
ton, colors cut corners, and time eats itself. Dub Plates Volume Two- a vinyl-only
collection of rare acetates that doubles as a greatest-versions set - should be a landmark
in post hip-hop sonic engineering. "Filter 13 (Ultra Dub)" is as explosive as Krust, as
sophisticated as Philip "Fatis" Burrell, and as riveting as DJ Premier. "Dance Plate", a
tribute to Black Uhuru's 1981 depth probe "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner", splits the riddim
and boggles your ear cavity. Follow the bass or follow the drum; Mama's calling you home.

Dub Plates Volume 2
M RECORDS/ CARGO GERMANY
Ryan Moore, der Mann, der hinter dem Twilight Circus Dub Sound System steckt,
entwickelt sich langsam zum Bill Laswell des Neo-Dub. Zumindest was die Veröffentlichungs-
frequenz seiner Alben betrifft.
Echokammer. Wer Dub denkt, muß in Zunkunft Twilight Circus Dub Sound System sagen.(ko) *****

Dub Plates Volume 2
"Since 1995, ex-Vancouverite and now Amsterdam-er Ryan Moore has given the
world five full-lengths of pure niceness--including the recently reissued
debut, In Dub vol 1. Here, on a heavy-duty vinyl-only release, Moore turns
out a rock-steady set. Featuring new tracks alongside dubplate versions of
earlier works, Dub Plates Vol. Two makes it clear that while Twilight Circus's
sounds are authentic, Moore is not star-struck. He is rooted in the purist
dub tradition, adding effects to the instruments that he plays, but certainly
experiments. His sounds, and way of approaching the music, are super-fresh.
Witness "Bord Plate" and "New Rockers," two pieces deeply rooted in the
traditional yet bearing Moore's own richness. "Kik Plate" and "Dance Plate"
are beautifully reworked dubs of songs from the excellent 1999 release, Horsie ;
both are thick, melodic and gorgeous. A must-have for dub fans. Watch out
also for Dub Voyage, tentatively scheduled for June release."

"ryan moore's dutch-based twilight circus dub sound system is building up a
fearsome reputation for creating a bass-heavy gumbo of lethal dub
concoctions, compressed by gruelling top and mid range sonic effects on dub
plates vol 2 that makes you wince in fear for you speaker cones. on the
second in this series of exclusive cuts and previously unreleased mixes,
moore has taken concrete, lethal-sounding console trickery to another
level."

"cut for maximum drum n' bass vibrations at the legendary dubplates and
mastering studios in berlin and pressed on audiophile 180 gram vinyl, the
second release in ryan moore's sound system series might have been a triumph
of shape over substance, had it not been for a full three stripe set. the
use of real instruments, pulling back on overused techno effects, is what
makes this selection stand out. from the storming first track, constructed
like a classic channel one cut, through to the thunderous closer, the album
is a real ear-opener for those who foolishly avoided moore's previous output
in his dubwise incarnation. this canadian may have a hard beat pedigree with
the likes of skinny puppy and legendary pink dots, but he has found his most
creative niche as a purveyor of heavy, heavy rhythms in a traditional style,
while hitting on the secret of that most elusive element for the new dub
genre - freshness."
Twilight Circus Dub Sound System
"Dub Plates Volume Two" LP
M Records 180, 1999
Produced, performed and mixed by Ryan Moore.
Heavy duty dub on heavy duty 180 gram vinyl mastered at the legendary Dubplates and
Mastering in Berlin. It doesn't get much better than this! Ryan Moore, bass player
and drummer for the Legendary Pink Dots and the Tear Garden, keeps himself very busy
with his very own genuine analogue dub project. "Dub Plates Volume Two" is his 6th
full length release in just 5 years and it is the vinyl only follow-up to 1998's
"Dub Plate Selection". The record jacket describes the LP as "a collection of
special dubplate mixes and exclusive Twilight Circus tracks previously only
available to sound systems and d.j's." There's at least 2 new tracks ("Trinity"
and "Iguana") while the rest are new versions of tracks from several past albums.
With the previous album "Horsie" Ryan added guitars to the mix but this LP
concentrates on raw, stripped down dub workouts. These tracks feature the usual
array of colorful sounds, most of which are played live by Ryan: drums and
percussion, organ hits/melodies and *deep* bass lines all immersed in a swirling
sea of effects and atmospheres. This music sounds amazing on vinyl, especially nice
thick quality vinyl such as this. There's a reason vinyl enthusiasts are so die
hard and this is it. "Dub Plates Volume Two" is yet another superb collection of
tracks and it sure is cool we've been given the chance to own them. Sound files are
available at the TC page. Look for the new Twilight Circus album "Dub Voyage" in
mid April and the new Tear Garden album "Crystal Mass" later in the year as well as Ryan
on tour with the Pink Dots in the States this May/June ...

Twilight Circus Dub Sound System- Dub Plates Volume 2
Label: M Records
Format: LP
Pressed up on virgin 180-gram vinyl and mastered at the Berlin home of
heavyweight bass productions, the ever-estimable
Dub Plates And Mastering, Dub Plates Volume Two just feels so right it
almost shakes the floor and windows by its
presence on the truntable. The slight hiss of needle in groove, the
faint pop of genuine analogue friction between diamond
and plastic - ahh, the joys of so-called (near-)dead media!
This, the second collection of Twilight Circus dub plates originally
issued to sound systems and DJs around the world,
marks out some further glorious vibrations from Holland and/or Canada's
(Hell, Europe and North America's) premier
exponent of realtime studio mixdown Reggae in a dub style. With most
instruments played live by Ryan Moore, it's still
surprising after all these years that Twilight Circus sounds so much
like a "real" band - but that's one of the advantages of
using the studio as another instrument. And in true Jamaican producer
tradition, there's a photo of the setup on the back
sleeve for techies to pore over and consider.
Less production-minded listeners can just sit back, or even better
recline, and feel the results of all that lovely analogue
technology and the years of loving experience which have gone into those
grooves, vinyl and musical alike. Drum crashes,
percusion rattles, and above all, bass flows under it all. Swirling
organs, trilling melodicas, the tenderly prowling harrumph
of synthesizer bass riff of the latest version of "Filter 13" in "Ultra
Dub" guise which concludes the set so marvellously, all
wrapped and warped in the ever-recursing dreamstates drawn from echo
box, echo box, echo box... - each release by
Moore adds futher incremental axial tilt to the world, encourages the
inhalation of more fragrant smoke, wears down the
soles of shoes shuffling and stepping to the heart and soul beat. This
is only right and proper, and true.
