Twilight Circus Dub Sound System

" Bin Shaker Dub " Music Reviews

'Bin Shaker Dub' was released in 1997 and contains 10 tracks, written, arranged and produced by Ryan Moore, the Canadian dub wizzard, based in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. As always he uses no programming or computer sequencing, the album is entirely made with live instrumentation, just the way it was done in the 70s in Jamaica. Most tracks are trance-inducing dub windows to the music's soul. Ocassionally the music sounds scary, wrapped round in pulsating tempos with intergalactical dub effects. It's hard to trace the originals (most of the songs are originals !), but to my knowledge 'Thunder Mix' is losely based a Scientist dub from the early 80s, versioning Don Carlos' 'Plantation'. The beat is mainly mid-tempo, except for the tracks 'Lowell and Nine" and 'UK Steppers', where Ryan Moore speeds things up. Great album from the Canadian dub wizzard, serious heavy weight nineties dub !

Ever since the Clash's dub-punk experiments of nearly 20(!) years ago, artists on the fringes of rock have been dabbling in dub and reggae sounds. But never has dub been as popular as in the last few years, with its influence being heard in the ambient soundscapes of The Orb, the avant-rock of Tortoise, the dark experiments of Bill Laswell, and - as you would expect from this introduction - on the two discs named above.

Him is a sort-of solo project from Doug Scharin (ex-Codeine drummer) where he applies the lo-fi attitude of his main gig, Rex, to dark ambient dub explorations that draw from both the old school (Perry, Tubby, et al) and the new (Sherwood and Laswell). The edges are rough, due perhaps to the 4-track recording method that was used, but it's still an engaging listen.

A bit truer to the genre's roots, from the moniker on down, is Twilight Circus Dub Sound System, aka Ryan Moore of the Legendary Pink Dots. As on his two previous albums, Moore displays both a deep knowledge and a deep love for this music, with tracks like "Lowell and Nine" sounding so authentic I could imagine them appearing on the "version" side of a mid-70's Jamaican reggae 7 inch. Extra points must be awarded for the inclusion of reggae legend Sly Dunbar on drums for a couple of tracks. Twilight Circus Dub Sound System: Bin Shaker Dub
Over the last decade or so, the number of great, new reggae dub records has dwindled drastically. Excepting On-U releases, Israel Vibratin and a handful of others, there just has not been much worthwhile reggae for those of us who dislike computer riddims and drum machines. The more interesting dub-related releases are now coming out of so-called electronica, where the inspiration is fresh, and artists are not afraid to take chances. Ryan Moore, the bassist behind Twilight Circus, is one of many artists working in the neo-dub sphere, but whose work is much closer to classic reggae than ambient or jungle. Moore has previously played in the Tear Garden and the recent incarnation of the Legendary Pink Dots, so the style of this side project is a bit of a surprise. Using live instruments and an obvious love for classic '70s dub recording technique, he has crafted a great atmospheric sound with heavy bass and drums, and a generous supply of reverb. Most of the material here (the third full-length release) is strong, and none of the ideas over stay their welcome. His bass playing shows power and imagination, but could be more supple. Quibbles aside, this is worth seeking out by all fans of dub, reggae or otherwise. (M, Box 488, 6500 AL Nijimegen, the Netherlands) - Chris Detzer Option, No. 77 Nov.*Dec. 1997

This is "2001: A Space Odyssey" meets "Poltergeist". If you thought smoking too much weed or drinking too much Guinness punch would make you use another five per cent of your brain, try playing this little nugget at night. Most definitely the best release so far from the space-age dubists Twilight Circus. The music just screams for attention and only the most foolish record buyer will pass it up. 9

    Bin Shaker Dub (M-Records)

Wort vervolqd. Gonzo Circus

Led by Canadian multi-instrumentalist Ryan Moore, dubists Twilight Circus slowly chew each sound, extracting every possible taste from it. Spaced out and industrial with a distinct Arabic twang to it, "UK Steppers" is a spiritually cleansing experience. Unfortunately, there are only 128 copies of this handmade pink vinyl in circulation.9
