Twilight Circus Dub Sound System

" Other Worlds of Dub " Music Reviews

This is the second cd release (1996) from Canadian dub specialist Ryan Moore, entitled 'Other Worlds Of Dub', and that's what the album is all about. Although Ryan Moore's outings are firmly rooted in the dub tradition of the great Jamaican dub kings, he manages to create a recognisable sound of his own. He uses no computers, all tracks are made with real instruments, and that is the reason why the album has a 'warm' feeling about it. The album is a pleasant mix of dub extravaganza and some more straightforward tunes. Although all songs are originals, Ryan Moore somtimes uses snatches of well known dub tracks, and the effect is highly enertaining. A nice collection of nineties dub workouts !

    Twilight Circus
    Other Worlds of Dub

Ryan Moore strikes again with his second solo dub album. Last years Twilight Circus - In Dub album was an amazingly well done tribute to the masters of 70s reggae dub style. Just as on the last album, Moore plays most of the instruments (bass, drums, guitar, keys etc..) with the exception of a few guests. This time Twilight Circus has a more ambient / world feel, with middle eastern voices and scales as well as various synthesizer manipulations. The underlying elements are still the same 70s feeling roots dub style. This fusion is kind of a new slant on ambient dub. On many parts of the album it works quite well and creates a blissful and trancy head space but there are moments where the samples and the live rhythms dont quite meet up and it seems a bit disjointed.

For its simplicity I like the first Twilight Circus album better but this one has its beauty as well and for its freshness I prefer this one. The contrast between the ambient sections and when they drop out to reveal the stripped down drum and bass power is amazing. The dub techniques are beautiful. The bass riddems are niceee!!! Over all I would definitely suggest this album to just about any one, roots dub fans, ambient dub fans and newbies too. Very nice Mr. Moore, keep em commin....

    Other Worlds of Dub

Jamaican riddims and snakelike Arabic melodies, performed by an Anglo ex-pat residing in the Netherlands - now that's world beat. Ryan Moore's Other Worlds of Dub opens with a hollow clatter of rock-steady drums and a woozy lick that sounds like a trombone. It soon becomes apparent that the brass is actually a manipulated human voice wailing on a centries-old, open-throated theme. The remarkable fluidity of this transition makes a statement or two about the durability and timelessness of head music, of which Other Worlds is a stellar example. According to Moore's spare liner notes, his drums were recorded during a two month period in Vancouver, while all overdubs were added during a second recording session in the Netherlands. Like the best dubwise records, these echoey drums provide rhythm enough to carry the whole project; on top, Moore's sythetic blips, gurgles and washes add color like sunbursts on the back of eyelids. Traditional reggae instruments and ideas share space as well: 'Indian' for instance, features a borrowed bass riff from Bob Marley's 'Night Shift' off Rastaman Vibration. Not a bad place to look for ispiration. OPTION

'Other Worlds' herbergt grensverleggende dub-muziek.

On Other Worlds Of Dub, Vancouver composer/multi-instrumentalist Ryan Moore explores spacey, amoeba-like dub grooves on tracks that grow, split and expand out of primordial rhythms. It's an engrossing listen; a one-way ticket to fruitful daydreaming.

but they aren't so utterly and painstakingly retro as Ryan Moore's utterly brilliant ( and uttely obscure) 1995 release Twilight Circus In Dub Part One. Moore's second release, Other Worlds Of Dub, shifts the location from a Spanish Town dancehall to a neon-lit cloudforest moored off the coast of Gotham, projecting fevered audio-fantasies - muezzin wails melting into high-desert guitars - on to dub's infinite soundwall. But this is an approach to future music making that has been rendered mundane and familiar by a decade of sampladelic cut 'n paste jobs. Not sure why Moore felt it necessary to launch himself into the Fourth World on this release: for a white Canadian, I'd have thought a Kingston yard circa 1972 was already an alien enviroment too far.
