" In Dub Vol. 1 " Music Reviews
"Twilight Circus In Dub Volume 1' is the initial compact disc release (1995) from Ryan Moore out
of Canada, now based in The Netherlands. All live instruments, no computers here ! The dub workouts
on this first album are heavily influenced by the likes of King Tubby and Scientist, but Ryan Moore
succeeds in creating his own atmosphere on the entire album. The organ riffs are predominant on most
tracks, and he throws in some nice drumrolls for good measure. The always present strong bass line
keeps up the pace throughout the album. The debut album of Twilight Circus is fierce, dark and heavy
drum'n'bass written, arranged and produced by Ryan Moore.

Twilight Circus In Dub Volume One
M Records 001 CD
Bassist Ryan Moore grew up playing in reggae groups in Toronto and Vancouver, while at the same
time pursuing an interest in improvising and the avante garde. He now lives in Holland, where he
works with The Legendary Pink Dots. Twilight Circus is a homage to the 70's JA sound,
but, of course, sounds nothing like the music of 20 years ago. However, like someone achieving
proficiency in a second language, the style of expression has a charm of its own. It also gains
from the fact that Moore can play the bass. In fact he plays nearly everything else on the record,
which has some of the off-centre lo-fi sound of 70's UK dub. Limited resources are exploited.
The retro aesthetic governs the presentation too: it's on vinyl only, packaged in cheap cardboard
with paper labels stuck fore and aft. Sure sounds a mindless idea, but it foregrounds the
intimidating burden of authencity that dub carries, and the wit and proficiency of the execution
make it an oddly entertaining record. The Wire
Finally (for Dub), from the Netherlands comes Twilight Circus in Dub Vol. One (M Records).
Produced and performed by Ryan Moore, the dubs are large, slow, sparse and somewhat psychedelic.
Pleasantly meandering keyboard, echo effects and little else touch up the bass-and drum=propelled
low-slung Dub Deluxe as it rolls through the landscape of "Valley of the Dub", "Big Dub" and seven
other tracks, although midi sax, violin and guitar keep it on the road. From the top of the ferris
wheel in the last light of dusk you can see the headlights cut a swath through the dark, the radio
playing "Dub Statikk" as the night winds begin to howl and the smell of popcorn stains the air.

Twilight Circus
'In Dub Volume 1'
M Records
(be)
*RIFRAF*
Twilight Circus * In Dub Vol. 1
Canadian bassist Ryan Moore has been in a slew of bands, including a stint with Europe's Lengendary
Pink Dots; he currently lives in Amsterdam. None of which would have suggested he might come up with
one of the sturdiest-rocking albums to emerge from the neo-dub revival yet. Moore even plays nearly
everything on the disc, save for a touch of extra percussion and some guest guitar, sax, and weeping
violin on "Valley of the Dub". The disc works for several reasons: Moore uses traditional Jamaican
rhythms as his strarting point; he knows how to keep his arrangements spacious and his bass playing
deep; and he adds just enough of a twist to keep the music inventive and fresh. Most of the songs
are fleshed out with meaty organ riffs, but it certainly can't hurt that Moore's a bass player
first, as that's where dub has to begin and end. A satisfying, organic dub feast. (M, Box 38253,

Dub-Lektionen
Was beim esten Blick

Mad Professor & Jah Shaka New Decade of Dub (Ariwa/Munich)
Eenmansdub van de in Nederland woonachtige Brit Ryan Moore. Zo'n jaar gelederr alleen uitgebracht
(MvH)
Opscene
Twilight Circus: Dub (M Records)
Wie weet zouden Word Sound I

Twilight Circus In Dub Vol. 1 / M Records / 1995
Dub music is alive and kicking. If you are into classic 70's roots dub like I am, you will
definitely dig on this amazingly classic new release from Ryan Moore who did just about
everything on this album. He played all the instruments, mixed and produced it on his own
indi label M Records.
It is not the most innovative dub happening today but it is beautiful and deep. I was wondering
when someone would start working in the mysterical tradition of the original deep dub style.
There is lotsa' great analog delay, reverb, bleeps and panning effects to create a spacious audio
mind message. The riddims are strong, especially the bass playing which is Ryan Moore's specialty.
The basic instrumentation is: drum kit, bass and organ (no frills). There is also some percussion
on one track by guest; Hugh-I (Shuggy) Mulligan, as well as guitar sax and violin played by
mystical magical guests. The meldies and bass lines are stlin'. The sound quality is great. I
highly recommend this album for any fan of dub music new or old.

And finally comes the sort of "odd man out" of this group of releases:
'In Dub Vol. 1 (M Records), a vinyl LP limited to 1000 copies by Twilight Circus aka
Pink Dots bassist Ryan Moore. No experiments here. No weirdness, no electronics. Instead, Moore
has recorded, as the name suggests, a dub reggae album, and a damn good one at that. As someone
who lives in an area of Toronto with a high Jamaican population, I can say with much coonviction
that this album sounds just as authenticas "de real t'ing, mon" that I often hear booming from the
roti shops and West Indian grocers in my area. The quality is made even more amazing when you
realize that nearly all the music and instruments were played by Moore, who also made all the
covers by hand. Like all side projects from the world of the Legendary Pink Dots, this is a true
labour of love. Something to be treasured by their legion of fans the world over. Something to
help you enter the Terminal Kaleidoscope with the Prophet Qa Sepel, Lisa, The Captain and all
the others, count 834, and sing while you may...
