Twilight Circus Dub Sound System

    Interview for " Dub Flash " - Germany, 20.11.2000

    1) Hello Mr. Moore. Could you please tell us something about yourself?

i am a long time dubhead who is making modern dub tracks to shake turntables and dancefloors throughout the planet and beyond...

    2) Do you have "normal" days in your life? How would they be like?

i wish! no normal days for me..i guess a typical day involves waking, drinking a bunch of coffee, and running the affairs of my label, m records..if i'm lucky i get a chance to make some music in the studio. at least i'm always thinking about it, music that is, which counts if you ask me..

    3) You are in the music business for a long time now. Could you tell us about your career?

i started out in 1981 playing bass guitar in roots reggae bands, playing original hard core tunes. i played in this scene for many years and did my first dub experiments already in the early 80's. since then i've played in numerous bands doing different styles of music, toured around the world & appeared on something like 50 albums. i released the 1st twilight circus dub album on m records in 1995 and now have 8 releases as TCDSS.

    4) You are from Canada. Why do you live / work now in the Netherlands? Do you like it there?

i'm from vancouver originally. i ended up in holland more or less by accident, coming over to work with a dutch based group and staying. being based in the netherlands is cool at the moment - all the conditions exist here to work on my own productions and it is in an excellent central location within europe. so the logistics of travel for sound system dates within europe is quite good.

    5) Who or what is "Twilight Circus"?

a live and studio dub music project which consists of myself, my ears and instincts plus, all the years of musical experiences built up in various situations over 20 years in the music biz...

    6) What would be your definition of dub?

a studio mixing technique invented in jamaica and expanded upon principally by king tubby. the engineer brings channels up and down using the mixing desk faders and uses studio technology & taste to create a new track from an existing song. dub is really the roots of remix culture and informs modern music as we know it, especially dance music.

    7) How did you get in contact with dub? What is the special thing about dub for you?

i first heard jamaican dub tracks in 1981 - classic stuff from scientist, king tubby, augustus pablo and so on. it immediately captured my full attention like, 'wow, this is MY kind of music'. i was instantly in love with this sound and somehow, i felt totally in tune with this style of music, being attracted to the stripped down bass and drums grooves, cavernous reverbs and echo effects. i love dub!

    8) Do you have contact to other dub producers in the Netherlands and worldwide?

yes, mainly with certain artists/producers in the uk and usa. we keep in touch via email, trade info etc..a bit of a 'community' vibe there.

    9) You run the "Twilight Circus" Sound System. Tell us something about this, please.

this started mainly as a 'live' act to present the TCDSS tracks in a live situation. nowadays, it has evolved into more of a dj style sound system meaning i'm using turntables, live bass etc to present not only TCDSS tracks, but also classic & modern dub tracks, as well as any number of musical styles or genres which fit the atmosphere of the club or event. anything is possible.

    10) What do you prefer? Live or studio work?

its comparing apples & oranges really - they are different things and appeal to me in different ways...i love working on tracks in the studio but also like the travel and most experiences involved with doing live dates...i also like running my m records imprint.

    11) What is " in your opinion " your best album (release) so far?

hmm, i think i like the albums starting with 'binshaker dub' (1997) up til the present most...as for what i consider to be the single 'best', i couldn't really say...if someone hadn't heard any twilight circus, i'd probably recommend something from the dubpplates series or the newest album 'dub voyage'.

    12) Do you already work on new stuff? What can we expect from you in the future?

i'm always at work whenever i can. at the moment i have 1/2 an album already finished of brand new dub tracks. i plan to release this early next year. also, another installment in the dubplate series, #3 is planned for 2001. in the future, as per usual, you can pretty much expect more floor shakin' bass & drum heavy cuts !!

    13) Something that interests me very much: Your first releases were mostly on CD only. Now you release on vinyl, too, what makes me very happy. The vinyl you use is best quality. Can you tell us more about this?

my 1st release, 'in dub vol 1' , in fact was a vinyl only release! because of the expenses involved and lack of public demand for vinyl, i concentrated on cd only for quite a few years, but things have changed recently in that there is a large interest in vinyl so, i'm pressing vinyl again, which is nice. i'm a huge vinyl fan myself. at the moment i only have a turntable set up in my living room! the m records' vinyl pressings are mastered and pressed in germany, at places where the quality is indeed excellent. still, on a business level, vinyl is difficult for labels as it costs much more than cds to manufacture and ship, while the wholesale and retail prices for a vinyl lp are less than a cd! so its a bit of a 'squeeze' on resources. still, i'm very happy to currently be able to present the music on the vinyl format!

    14) Most dub producers are present in the internet today. You have a website, too. Since when do you have it? Do you program it yourself?

the site has been around since 1997. i don't program it myself - aaron campbell who is located in the usa is the webmaster.

    15) How important is the internet for you and for dub in general today?

the net has drastically changed my life via email - most communication with other people and business is done this way. beyond that, i sometimes find the net useful in terms of finding out information. as far as dub goes, i guess the net situation is possibly advantageous for making info and music available online.
